A Week in the Life of a Dietetic Intern (3/40)

Last week of clinical core then it's onto rotations!
Monday

  • Today we talked about integrative and functional medicine, enteral calculations, and nutrition problems related to cardiology. We also talked about the results of our StrengthsFinder assessment. My top five strengths:
    • Harmony- people exceptionally talented in the Harmony theme look for consensus. They don't enjoy conflict; rather, they seek areas of agreement.
    • Restorative- people exceptionally talented in the Restorative theme are adept at dealing with problems. They are good at figuring out what is wrong and resolving it.
    • Context- people exceptionally talented in the Context theme enjoy thinking about the past. They understand the present by researching its history.
    • Learner- people exceptionally talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. The process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.
    • Individualization- people exceptionally talented in the Individualization theme are intrigued with the unique qualities of each person. They have a gift for figuring out how different people can work together productively.
  • It was a rainy, dreary day so I made some comforting yellow rice and mixed it with some cottage cheese. (Apparently the rice + cottage cheese combo is a weird one according to my Instagram story, 73% of people voted "yes, it is weird" and 27% of people voted "no, it's not weird"- and 75% of the "no" voters were my family so go figure)

Tuesday
  • Today in Clinical Core we talked a lot about TPN calculations, did a case study on childhood obesity, and had the chance to try lots of modified foods and talk about modified diets.

  • After class, we went outside the James and had a cooking demonstration from Chef Jim Warner and the Mobile Education KitchenTruck! They made us Greek Zucchini Noodle Salad :)

Wednesday
  • Today we had a counseling session with a standardized patient. We were instructed to use Motivational Interviewing techniques with the patient to counsel them on weight loss and diets for pre-hypertension. It was very intimidating going into a counseling session with a real actor and very little experience, but it ended up being very educational and I gained some great counseling experience from it.

  • After the counseling session I had another Simple Suppers training session where we learned about facilitating groups and food safety.
  • For dinner tonight, my boyfriend and I met in Bexley at Harvest Pizzeria. Everything was delicious and we can't wait to come back for more!

Thursday
  • Today was an all-day Malnutrition Seminar. We learned about what malnutrition looks like in a Nutrition Focused Physical Exam and then we had the opportunity to practice NFPE on a real patient.
  • After the seminar we all met for a drink at Matt the Miller's in Grandview to celebrate being done with clinical core and the start of a long weekend!
Friday
  • My roommate and I explored the Short North a bit and had lunch at the North Market

  • We spent the rest of the day at the pool and when my boyfriend was finished with work we headed up to Kelleys Island for the long weekend.
Saturday
  • So excited for the start of Buckeye Football!! We spent the morning and afternoon at Caddyshack on Kelley's Island watching the game and then moved onto Docker's before calling it a day and relaxing at home.

Sunday
  • Today was a dreary, rainy day so we stayed inside and relaxed for most of it- making every minute of the long weekend count!
